My Gallery Is Finally Up And Running!

Posted by: Jill Pearson on 11/03/2009 - 1:09 PM

It took me a while but I finally got my photos up. I had to scan my negatives. Any comments or suggestions would be greatly appreciated. I have several questions.
Here are a few to start.
- In my Bio I mention my disability. A friend suggested it. Now other friends say it is not a good idea. Will naming my disability hurt me with buyers? Any suggestions or guesses.
- The photos I am selling are signed and numbered. Do I list them as pritns or originals?
- If I go with print on demand POD, should I have my signature on my prints? I sing the prints I sell so my name is on them. Shouls I do the same for the Print on Demand at FAA? If so, how?
- I am thinking of going with POD because I have some more recent digital photos I'd like to sell. Do prints sell better with POD rather than having to contact the artist?

Those are for a start. I am sure I will have more questions as I get fruther into this.

Go with your heart Jill -- you're sharing who you are. I don't have POD -- there are many here who will help you with that.

Your gallery looks great -- good to 'meet' you!

Exactly as Carmen said. You must do what is in your heart or you will never feel it is right and will keep having to ask.

I sign my work with a small signature unless it is a photograph, and then I dont.
Dont use your real signature, use one that is just for images... (means others cant forge your name on anyuthing)
Customers will always do what is easiest, so if they want prints they will hit the buy button faster than a contact button.

Thank you Carmen and Beth.
That is a good point Beth about not using your signature. you don't sign photos though. Mine are all photos so I guess I won't worry about it. shouldn't I have my name on it somewhere though so people know who's photo it is?

That is entirely up to yourself. You must keep it small or light though or people will be put off buying it. Nothing worse than seeing a name all over a photo

Would someone explain to me what exactly a "gallery" is. I posted my pictures, they are visible under my bio. Now what do I do to have a "gallery"? (There is no "help" option on FAA, unfortunately.)

For me, it's semantics -- I use the term 'gallery' or 'portfolio' to refer to the display of images on FAA artist pages.

You can sort your images into various categories -- perhaps that's also thought of as 'galleries'.

I think FAA artist Beth Edwards may have a tutorial on this -- she checks in regularly and will be sure to help.

Madeleine many people call their whole page here where they show their work off, a gallery.

However, you can also make galleries (categories) for your art too :)

In your admin, click the tab that says 'Galleries'

Make a few galleries (categories) like flowers, animals, black and white... etc you get the idea.

Then you can edit your images and pop them in the right galleries, or when you upload a new image, place it directly in the right gallery.

If you are showing a certain type of work off you can then just send someone to view that gallery :)

Thank you so much for your quick and helpful responses, Carmen and Beth. Now I understand. Off to create my galleries I go! (And by the way, I checked both your "portfolios" and/or "Galleries" and I really like what you do!

Hi Jill, My dad was an amazing photographer who suffered from glaucoma for years. It never deterred him from his love of photography and so nothing should deter you from what you love to do. I wish you great success.

Thank you Reb. It never has detered me. I am a book junkie and I love to write for my website as well. I find people put up more obstacles for me than my vision does.
Thank you very much!
